WOW Latest News

Posted 2nd March 2024

The good news is that as February comes to an end, the nights will finally be getting lighter, and hopefully it might even stop raining!
During the last few weeks, medical days have been held in Uganda. Due to malaria nets being distrubuted annually and health awareness training taking place regularly,  we have seen a huge reduction in the malaria infection rate amongst the women, which is great news! However, we have seen an increase in general aches and pains, plus more women suffering with leg ulcers, so regular blood testing is taking place to check for any underlying medical issues. These regular checks help identify problems early, and we are then able to refer women for further tests or arrange a hospital check up when needed

There are a few women that we would really like you to pray for. Beatrice, who has been featured on the WOW News front cover, is an incredible woman. During our visit in September we were able to buy Beatrice a bed, mattress, and new sheets and she was literally jumping on the bed with joy. Sadly she has started to have some mental health issues. She has moved closed to the town centre to stay with some friends, where our staff, Agnes and Helen, can support her more easily. Her life has been full of traumatic circumstances and situations, and the staff are working with her closely, praying and caring for her.  She is also receiving professional help. Secondly, Esther fell a few weeks ago and hurt her wrist, but did not get it checked. During her medical examination the doctors discovered she had broken her wrist and she now has a full arm cast as you can see below.Thirdly, Rozila has been sent for futher tests. The doctor noticed a large growth on her shoulder which was causing her a lot of pain. She has been referred to a local cancer hospital for more tests and we are awaiting the results. Please pray for Beatrice, Esther and Rozila at this time.
As we have gathered the reports from all the projects ready for our annual report, we have been so encouraged, Children have achieved amazing grades in the Philippines, the setting up of the NGO in Mozambique is nearly complete and we can soon start to drill the borewell, This will transform the lives of the women in Mbuvane, and we are so excited to see this happen.

We count it a privilege to be able to support so many women and their familes around the world. Thank you for partnering with us and for all your support and prayers. We look forward to seeing what God has ahead in March.

Have a great day!  Every blessing

WOW Latest News

Posted December 2023

It's the last day of November and the Christmas decorations and tree are out the loft at home and ready to go up. It's on the job list for the weekend, now that the Christmas stockings for Bulgaria have all been checked, boxed up, and are on their way.
A huge thank you to the NG Network from Nottingham and also to Riviera Life Church, Torquay for partnering with us to make this happen.

In total, there are over 220 stockings on their way to the children in the after school clubs in Bulgaria. Andy and the team from RLC and the NG Network will be in Bulgaria between 12th and 17th December. They will be meeting with very excited children, spending time with the project leaders, visiting a new project in Sliven, and speaking in the local churches.

If you're on Facebook, please do follow all that is happening!
As well as regular updates from the projects, you will be able to follow the journey of the Christmas stockings en route to Bulgaria.

All our other projects are now starting their preparations for Christmas, which is always a busy time of year for everyone. We'd be so grateful if you could just take a few minutes to pray for the WOW projects. Your support and prayers makes all that we do possible.
We really do appreciate your partnership, friendship and encouragement.

Have a great month!

Chunky Challenge

Who's Chunky?

Some of you may not know, but my nickname has been Chunky for over 20 years. It's from a film called the Goonies, just google it and you will see why! It's one of my favourite films and I have watched it with Hannah so many times. There are even a few Chunky mugs in the cupboard!

Why the challenge?

You may remember that in 2016 we started the building of a multi purpose hall on the main WOW land in Arua, Uganda. This is where training and medical days take place, church services are held, and safe accommodation is provided to two women who were homeless and in desperate need.

That building needs completing. It needs rendering inside and out, a concrete floor and  new wiring for the electrics, plus painting and decorating. The cost is around £8500

2017-07-12 10.45.27

What's the challenge?

As I am leading a team to Uganda on the 19th September, I decided to undertake a challenge to see the building completed. When travelling to Uganda, I usually fly into Entebbe and then drive to Arua and back. I have done this long, slow, bumpy trip many times, which is 1000km.

So I decided to set myself a challenge! I have not been near a gym for several years and well over 3 stone ago, and my level of fitness is pretty low - but here we go!!!

My challenge is to cycle over 1000km before I leave for the airport on the 18th September. I started on Monday 17th July which was 9 weeks before the trip. That gives me 63 days, excluding a trip to Bulgaria where I may not have access to a gym. So the challenge is to ride 20km every day, which will be well over the 1000km. To all those fit people, that may not be a challenge, but to me, well what can I say!

So far so good! My legs are sore and stairs are not my friend, but I am detereminded to get this done and see the building completed in Arua.

If you would like to support me, you can call the office on 01803 663681, or click on the link below. I will be updating Facebook with my progress.

Thank you Andy

Prayer Requests

Last month we asked you to pray for Armindo in Mozambique. We are so pleased to tell you that all his tests came back clear and that he has made a full recovery. Steve Thomas (WOW Chairman) is travelling to Mozambique in September to spend time with Armindo and will be discussing the project as we move forward.

Please pray for Andy as he leads a team to Bulgaria from 29th August - 2nd September where they will be visiting the projects and also taking part in the children's camps that are held on the outskirts of Plovdiv.

Andy then takes a team of eight to Uganda from the 19th September to 29th September. The team will be spending time with the women and project leaders. Part of the team will be recording new media, and some will be working on the main land in Arua and helping the women. There is also a leaders day for local Pastors, that will have sessions based on "How to lead well" and also some worship sessions.

Please pray that the team travel safely and really encourage and bless the women and staff in Uganda.

Belaynesh is part of our Women’s Empowerment Programme in Ethiopia and Rachel met her in October 2022. She had received a microloan to start her business selling charcoal, which is very profitable. She has completed her training and has recently graduated from the programme. She is now able to cover all her living expenses, and is able to save money on a regular basis.

Due to this investment, and the business training she received, Belaynesh’s income has increased by 150% per month! She is a single mum with two daughters and she is so pleased that she is now able to pay their school fees. She is now looking for a bigger shop!

Belaynesh’s business has also helped her to meet people in the community and improved her social life!

Welcome to WOW E-News June 2023

Where have the last few months gone? We are just returning from a family holiday and we are now in the catch up stage! We trust that you have been able to enjoy some of the recent sunshine and maybe an icecream too! We may not have been in the office, but our overseas partners, and the women and families we support, are never far from our thoughts. The updates continue to be received on a regular basis. There will be more news and updates including Andy's recent trip to the Philippines and Bulgaria in the next WOW Newsletter which we are just starting!

We want to thank you and remind you that your support is making such a difference.
We really do appreciate your partnership and friendship.
Have a great month

First aid training was recently held for the girls in the Livesey Children's Home in Coimbatore. A nurse from a local hospital volunteered her time and demonstrated basic first aid methods and held a class on how to lead a healthy lifestyle.

To keep the girls active, a dance lesson on Bharathanatyam (the traditional dance form of Southern India) was held by Lybna, our Project Co-ordinator who used to be a professional dancer. The dance included teaching the children the basics of Bharathanatyam, including posture,  and the primary steps of this art form. The girls had fun, as well as learning the benefits of being active.

We love to celebrate success!

Pavithra has been part of the home in Coimbatore for many years and we have watched her grow from a child into a young lady. Pavithra has faced many health challenges, including some physical disabilities, but this has not stopped her persevering with her education.

Joining the Esther Project in 2018, Pavithra completed an under graduation course in Economics at the Government Arts College in Thondamuthur in 2021 and received her degree for a Bachelors in Economics.

We are so pleased to tell you that Pavithra has just completed her Masters in Economics! We are so proud of Pavithra.

Well done Pavithra

Prayer Requests

Please pray for Armindo, pictured below with Andy and Steve Thomas. He leads the project in Mozambique and over the last few months has been feeling unwell. After visiting a local hospital he was diagnosed with arterial hypertension, and then sent home as they had no medication to help him.

We then sent him to a private medical clinic where he was diagnosed with a stomach infection as well as the hypertension. He was prescribed some medication and advised to make some lifestyle changes and is now at home recovering.
We then paid for him to visit South Africa where he had a full health check and they confirmed the diagnosis. Please pray for him as as he continues to recover.

Also please continue to pray for Marina in Bulgaria as she has more scans and tests. The cancer has not grown or spread, but has stayed the same. The doctors have suggested some more chemotheopy sessions but at present Marina looks well and has regained some strength. You can see Marina on the left of the photo, taken at the Logos board meeting, when Andy was in Bulgaria recently.

Please pray for a speedy recovery for Armindo and a continued recovery for Marina.
